Reverse Military Skills Translator

We built a tool that puts the knowledge and understanding of military job information and job codes into the hands of the civilian employer. Leveraging this information, Military.com’s Reverse Military Skills Translator allows employers to better understand how their open jobs correspond to candidates’ military experience and military occupations (MOS).

Leveraging Military Experience in the Civilian Workforce

Veterans are incredible assets to organizations. They bring the discipline, leadership, and skills needed for a successful workforce. But tangible military skills can be difficult to translate across the civilian workforce. In fact, more than 65 percent* of veteran workers leave civilian roles within two years of their hire date, because they feel the job isn’t the right fit.

To prevent this attrition and to place veterans in positions where they feel valued and intend to stay for the long run, companies must equip themselves with the tools to find the right candidates to fill their open positions. Former military personnel have access to programs that help them determine how to leverage their military skills in the civilian workforce—why shouldn’t organizations have the same? That’s where the Reverse Military Skills Translator (R-MST) can help.

Pictured above: One-of-a-kind detail page for each MOS provides the administrator the information they need to assess a candidates’ likelihood of success in a specific role. Identifies other active jobs that are a match for that MOS.

What It Is

We built a tool that puts the knowledge and understanding of military job information and job codes into the hands of the civilian employer. Leveraging this information, the R-MST allows employers to better understand how their open jobs correspond to candidates’ military experience and military occupations (MOS).

What It Does

There are more than 4,700 unique jobs and titles within the five branches of the military. While it would be impossible for employers to know the roles and responsibilities of each MOS or position, Monster and Military.com make it simple with our R-MST. Specifically designed with talent acquisition professionals in mind, the R-MST is simple to use and can be tailored for any open job within an organization. The value in this feature is that interviewers can use it to better understand a candidate’s fit to a position.

How It Works

The internal user selects a job from their live stream and is presented with a list of military occupations that are potential matches for the job. The detailed information about a MOS can then be compared to the details of the job requisition. The tool also provides a list of other active jobs that are potential matches for that MOS.

Why It Works

With the R-MST, employers can eliminate the need to cast a wide net by tailoring their hiring campaigns to the veteran audience, right from the start. This saves recruiting costs and targets the most desired MOS for the job. By giving both veteran candidates and the organizations looking to hire them this tool, we increase the probability of finding the right fit for the right job. This benefits everyone, making a hiring program more effective and at the same time, placing more veterans in quality jobs.
