Monster’s 2020 hiring trend predictions

As the 2010s end, all eyes turn to 2020—the start of the next decade of hiring at the height of a tight jobs market. There are more job openings than unemployed workers, making it a challenge to find the best, talented workers for open spots. Candidates want more money, they want job security, and they want a positive work environment, according to Monster’s recent State of the Candidate survey. Recruiters are going to have to bring their best game to the table to attract the good people.

In 2020, that’s going to mean making better use of video and other technologies. It means creating a more personal hiring (and employment) experience for talent. And it means getting more precise with technology to find the true, best fit for each position.

Here’s what to expect from hiring this year:

Automated systems will get more personal

Automation is usually about creating efficiencies, doing the mundane tasks that human recruitment professionals don’t need to do. But with new systems, some experts are seeing a paradigm shift in how employers—and their systems—will be thinking about talent.

The idea is that human resources shouldn’t be a cost center for an organization in which hiring and managing employees is transactional, but rather a department designed to maximize value through cultivating the employee experience. That starts with talent sourcing and employer brand, but continues through employment, internal growth and mobility.

“Some of the most innovative stuff coming from the human capital management arena is really about talent lifestyle management,” says Jesse Kearns, global partnerships manager for Monster. “It’s not just about finding the right person and pushing them through the system. It’s about finding the right person, insuring they’re a cultural match and then creating an experience for that person within a company or within a team that drives the success not only of the individual but of the whole business.”

Social media and video are going to play a bigger role

Some experts see job seekers moving away from job interactions via email, text message and phone—and more willing to engage with an opportunity that comes to them via social media. “People today are far more intentional and discerning about how they’re engaged,” says Nathan Brumby, chief product officer at Monster. “If you’re under 35, you’ve never known a life where haven’t had that instant access to information.”

Brumby also sees video playing a larger role as recruiting matures digitally. This is true both in terms of candidates who want to express themselves more holistically and for employers who want to ramp up job advertisements. “I think we’re going to see—particularly if we go into a down market—employers be far more creative in presenting the value and reasons to join their company,” Brumby says. “I think we’ll see video leveraged.”

Technology will get more accurate

This could be the year that technology gets more precise in terms of matching (or eliminating) candidates with jobs. Currently, applicant tracking systems aren’t very exact in opting people in and out of job searches, resulting in candidates applying for every opportunity available, even if it’s not right for them. “Then companies complain that not the right kinds of candidates are applying,” says Danny Ashraf, Monster’s director of sales.

“I think technology is finally to a point now where we’re going to see more accuracy in where we knock people out of a job search or opt people into it by saying, ‘They were a good sales person at some other point in their career, their last job as a team leader at Best Buy would make them a great sales person, we should consider them,’” Ashraf says.

Mobile apps will have to tighten their game

In 2020, it’s going to be crucial that users see your mobile app as a helpful tool in their job search. Targeted, appropriate communication through a mobile app can help interested job seekers find the best opportunities for them. If your pings are off the mark, users will turn off notifications for the app—or delete it.

“I get texts and I’m like, ‘I’m not interested in that job and who are you and why are you bothering me?” says Shawne Robinson, head of products for mobile apps at Monster. “Compare that to some sort of preapproved app of your choice. It’s already been prescreened, so now they’ve gone through proper protocol, they’re contacting you through a prefiltered experience.”

Companies (or staffing firms or both) will have to embrace upskilling

There are serious talent shortages in certain niches, with job seekers not having the required skills—but companies still need workers. “A lot of candidates can easily be trained or take a course to obtain those skills, so you’re seeing an increase in the amount of both commercial and staffing firms investing in upskilling courses or platforms,” Ashraf says.

Indeed, in 2018 staffing firm Adecco acquired tech education provider General Assembly. “We’re seeing a lot more of those types of platforms pop up,” Ashraf says. “And a lot more organizations are using them to train and upskill their people as opposed to looking elsewhere for them.”

Recruiters must address recession fears

Three in five job candidates said they’re worried about the state of the economy, and more than one in three think their job would be at stake if the U.S. experienced a recession, according to Monster’s data. Hence, they may not be as eager to execute an aggressive job change.

“We’re in a bull market that is pushing 10 years, and business cycles being what they are, there’s a lot of noise out there that we’re on borrowed time,” says Jonathan Beamer, chief marketing officer at Monster. “[Candidates are] afraid of being last one in, first one out.”

To address recession nerves, recruiters should emphasize the company’s health and a candidate’s future trajectory. “Have a conversation with candidates so they can feel assured that if they start working with you, they know it’s a strong company,” says Monster career expert Vicki Salemi. “That goes a long way.”
