Monster Monthly Hiring Report: October 2020 Snapshot

Six months after COVID-19 hit the United States and left millions out of work, the economy is continuing to show signs of recovery. We saw this in both the latest release of the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ (BLS) monthly jobs report and also on Monster. While the BLS reported gains of 661,000 jobs last month, Monster showed that the number of new job postings increased by 12 percent month-over-month in September. Across the board, we’re seeing companies continue to rebuild teams in transportation, retail, manufacturing, healthcare, tech, and more. Here are some of the industries having big impacts right now.

Supply and demand for transportation, warehousing, and retail jobs

Hiring in transportation, warehousing, and retail is on the upswing, just in time for the holidays. While several companies, including Target, FedEx, and Amazon, have recently announced big hiring plans for this holiday season, many have already started the hiring process on Monster. New job postings for retail positions, including sales clerks and managers, experienced a 14 percent monthly increase in August, followed by another 10 percent increase in September. In transportation, new job listings for couriers and messengers doubled from August to September. Demand was also high for order fillers, delivery drivers, packers, and shipping loaders.

The latest BLS report echoed these findings, showing gains of 142,000 jobs in retail trade and 74,000 jobs in transportation and warehousing in September. As more locations continue to open, along with the upcoming holiday shopping season, the Monster 2020 Hiring Report predicts that hiring will likely continue to ramp up in these sectors. Perhaps the increasing number of candidates searching for warehouse, package handler, and delivery driver jobs on Monster will help supply these companies with the help they need in the coming months.

Jobs are cooking in restaurants and bars

In New York City, restaurants can finally serve hungry customers inside of their establishments, something they haven’t been able to do since the coronavirus pandemic began, the Washington Post reports. In some parts of Florida, bars reopened in September for the first time since late June. These are just a few examples of places where restrictions are continuing to lift throughout the country, bringing jobs back in bars and restaurants.

On Monster, new job postings for cooks, food prep workers, and restaurant managers increased significantly last month—a trend we saw baked into the latest jobs report from the BLS. According to the BLS, employment in bars and restaurants rose by 200,000 in September.

Workers, too, seem eager to fire up the ovens in the kitchen or mix up some tasty concoctions from behind the bar. On Monster, job searches for “bartender,” “line cook,” “busser,” and “restaurant manager” increased throughout the month.

Hiring in healthcare sees healthy growth

While nursing and emergency care saw huge hiring increases in the early days of the pandemic, other “non-essential” areas were stalled. As non-emergency, elective medical and dental surgeries and procedures are allowed to resume, hiring is on the rise again in doctors’ offices and home health care services. According to the BLS, 108,000 payrolls were added in health care and social assistance last month.

This translates into more job postings and more job seekers on Monster. In September, we saw a healthy 6 percent monthly increase in new healthcare job postings, spanning a variety of positions. Employers hired for registered nurses, personal care aides, lab technicians, dental assistants, opticians, and respiratory therapists, to name a few. From the candidate perspective, some of the most sought after jobs included psychologist, RN, and nurse practitioner.

Job growth continues to build in manufacturing

Jobs in manufacturing have been a hot-button issue as we near the upcoming 2020 presidential election. Regardless, though, of whether you swing right, left, or somewhere in the middle of the political spectrum, the fact remains: manufacturing is on the rise. In September, the BLS reported gains of 66,000 in the manufacturing sector for a total of 12,205,000 jobs—just 647,000 fewer than it had in February when the COVID-19 pandemic struck.

Named a “key growth industry” in the recent Monster 2020 Hiring Report, all signs point to continued expansion in this space. From a hiring standpoint, new job postings, primarily for machinists and operational managers, increased in September on Monster. On the candidate side, job searches for light industrial-related roles saw solid increases as well.

Businesses start to rebuild teams

As businesses get back up and running at full speed, the Monster 2020 Hiring Report says they’ll need some support. Increasingly, we’ve seen more and more job listings for companies hiring secretaries, project managers, business operations specialists, customer service representatives, human resources specialists, and more on Monster. In September, alone, the BLS reports that 89,000 jobs were added in business and professional services.

This increase in jobs has certainly sparked the interest of many job seekers on Monster, too. Already, we’ve seen increased job searches for administrative assistant, project manager, and receptionist roles, as well as an influx of new resumes for professionals with experience in administration, management, marketing, etc.

Tech jobs are on the rise in a remote world

Tech jobs have been on the rise for some time—last year, the BLS had projected 531,000 new computer and IT jobs would be added within a decade. These positions became even more critical during the coronavirus pandemic, as businesses were forced to quickly shift to a remote workstyle. They needed workers to not only execute a successful remote framework, but also make sure that infrastructure was secure.

While these tech jobs were mostly temporary positions just a few months ago, employers are beginning to hire for more full-time roles as they realize the many benefits of going completely remote. Monster data shows that businesses have increased hiring for full-time, tech-related positions, particularly for software developers, network and computer systems administrators, computer user support specialists, computer systems analysts, information security analysts, and web developers. Backing up these findings, the BLS reports that employment increased by 12,000 in computer systems design and related services last month.

Additionally, IT-related job searches had large increases month-over-month on Monster as well.  Spanning a variety of computer and IT roles, some of the top keywords that candidates searched last month included “SQL developer,” “IT manager,” “cybersecurity,” “computer support specialist,” “help desk technician,” and “certification analyst.”

It’s a job seeker’s market in real estate

It may be a seller’s market in real estate, but it’s a job seeker’s market, too. On Monster, new real estate-related job postings increased by 40 percent month-over-month for positions ranging from real estate agents to property and community association managers to loan officers and interviewers. The BLS revealed a similar trend, with 37,000 payrolls added in real estate, rental and leasing, finance, and insurance last month. According to the Monster 2020 Hiring Report, professionals in the home buying and mortgage industry will continue to be in high-demand in correlation with the expected low interest rates projected through 2020.
