Monster Video: A Recruiting Strategy to Compete for Gen Y Talent

If you want to compete for top talent, you may wonder if your small company can attract applicants with the talent and know-how to grow your company. 

Roberta Matuson, president of Human Resource Solutions and author of Suddenly in Charge*, has a suggestion: Gen Y.

There is never been a better time for small business owners to try to attract talent against the big guys than right now and that’s because of Gen Y.

Gen Y is a group of employees who right now are ages 31 and under who are in the workplace and they are much more concern with finding a workplace where there’s a mission.

They really want to do good things in the world and if your organization happens to be doing that, you’ll have a much better chance of getting them than one of the Fortune 500 companies.

This group of employees is all about connections and they want to be connected to your organization. Just because you’re a small employer, doesn’t mean that you cannot provide those connections.

So here’s an example of what I mean by this:  when I work with my small business clients to help them create environment that is attractive to this sector of the workforce, we look at doing things like creating social clubs within their organization.

For example, you may have 15 employees but that doesn’t mean you can’t start a foodie group, you could start a reading club, you could start a walking club.

This generation wants to be affiliated and connected, and as a small business owner you have the ability to do so.
