Managing in a recession

Brought to you by RainmakerThinking

In these difficult times a lot of people are feeling very powerless, like everything is melting down and there is nothing I can do. Everything is melting down and there is nothing you can do.

Well, there is something you can do. And that is, focus on what you can control; you; your guts, your skill, your time.

What are you doing every day to add real value in your workplace? Are you focusing on dotting more I's and crossing more T's and getting more work done better and faster? Who are you working with? Who are you managing?

There is no room for downtime, waste or inefficiency right now. There's no room for unnecessary problems. There is no room for small problems to get out of control and turn in to big problems. There is no room for error.

If you've got people who are looking to you for leadership, there is something you can control. You can roll up your sleeves and help them through this difficult time. Help them stay focused on their work, help them get more work done better and faster. Help them avoid unnecessary problems, salvage resources and keep moving in the right direction.

This is a time when we’ve all got to stay focused on what we can control and the real value we can add wherever we are. That's something you can really do.

KEY POINTS:

  • Focus on what you can control: YOUR GUTS, SKILL, AND TIME.
  • What can you do to add more REAL VALUE in your workplace?
  • If you are in a leadership role, HELP YOUR PEOPLE do more work better and faster.

BONUS MANAGEMENT TIP:

Ask every person you manage to keep a time log for one week and identify their biggest time wasters and their greatest ‘time management opportunities.’ Do it yourself as well. Meet with your people one-by-one to share your own experience and discuss theirs. Then help them, one-by-one, to eliminate their biggest time wasters and focus more acutely on their work.
