Summer Reading

Ah, summertime. And the living -- theoretically, anyway -- is easy. 

In today’s hyper-active world, a two-week vacation or afternoon at the beach is often a rare occasion.  

Nonetheless, rising temperatures provides a chance to downshift our thinking and enjoy life’s simple pleasures. It’s also a great time to dive into a good book and feed your mind.  

Here are a few recommendations to help get you started:

Jugaad Innovation: Think Frugal, Be Flexible, Generate Breakthrough Growth by Navi Radjou, Jaideep Prabhu and Simone Ahuja (Jossey-Bass, 2012)

This energetic book -- part manifesto, part guide -- makes a strong case for why innovation alone is no longer sufficient for businesses to succeed in a highly-competitive global landscape. Radjou and Prabhu, both from the University of Cambridge faculty, and Ahuja, founder of the marketing consultancy firm Blood Orange, offer six principles and numerous real-life examples in how to create a breakthrough growth strategy for your company, big or small.

The Career Lattice: Combat Brain Drain, Improve Company Culture and Attract Top Talent by Joanne Cleaver (McGraw Hill, 2012)

The corporate ladder, that traditional stepping stone to career advancement, is no more, according to business journalist and author Joanne Cleaver.  She offers instead a new model for employees and employers -- the career lattice -- as a means to address chronic skills gaps and initiate continual career growth.  The book offers detailed recommendations for both audiences, such as structuring a career lattice, team lattice building exercises and creating a lattice to leadership.

Contented Cows Still Give Better Milk: The Plain Truth about Employee Engagement and your Bottom Line by Bill Catlette and Richard Hadden (Wiley, 2012)

 

A revised and expanded edition of Contented Cows Give Better Milk (1998) features the same no-nonsense writing style found in the original. Twelve years on, the authors revisit their assertion that well-cared for cows (an engaged workforce) are higher-yielding cows (increased business success.) All kowtowing aside, the book features updated case studies and real-life examples of companies that have herd the good news about engagement, and includes performance benchmarks against respected indices.
