A 2009 survey of over 700 companies examines how companies are handling the downturn.

Since the onset of this
recession, fully a quarter of responding companies have cut
their low-performing product lines and 16% have closed plants or
offices. Some, however, have taken advantage of the depressed
climate to acquire other companies. Overall, though, the pattern is of American companies retrenching or digging in in preparation for a long period of slow or negative growth.
