Just as a resume is a reflection of the job candidate, your job posting is a reflection of your company and its author. Here’s how to make sure your posting reflects positively on both entities.
- Use active words, stay positive and avoid using exclamation points! Take the time to find the right words to call out the job’s unique characteristics and offerings.
- Describe the job’s tasks and goals, not the requirements. In other words, speak to what motivates people, such as:
- Opportunities for success
- Opportunities to achieve goals
- Opportunities for learning and development
- Opportunities for work / life balance
- Describe your work environment and culture -- provide some clues about your company’s character and the type of people who thrive there.
- Create an opening sentence as a “hook” to attract the person you’re looking to find. Make sure it includes the job title.
- Example: “Are you a customer service rep who’s a good conversationalist?...”
- Be scrupulous about editing. Have at least two other people review your posting for typos and format before it goes live on Monster. Once it’s posted, review it again on the site. Ask someone you trust for the overall impression that the posting conveys. Does it convey what you intended?
